Red sandalwood, alias: Lingnan jasmine, Xiaohua jasmine, red iron pigeon bean. Latin name: Huodendron var. Biaristatum (W. W. Sm), Rehd. var. parviflorum (Merr) Rehd. [1] When it first entered China in the 1990s, it was identified as a red acid branch and corrected in 2001. It is actually a red iron bean, Latin name Swartizia spp., Leguminosae, Casuarina. It is distributed in tropical America and Africa. It has fine structure, pleasant wood color, beautiful patterns, many characteristics are similar to red acid branch. There are about 100 species of Casuarina in the world. They are found in tropical America and Africa. There are two common timber species in Africa: scallion-leaf Casuarina and Madagascar Casuarina. Lingnan jasmine is produced in Yunnan (Funing), Guangxi (Dayaoshan), Guangdong (Lianping, Lechang, Yingde), Hunan (Jianghua, Xuefengshan) and Jiangxi (Anyuan, Dayu). Born in dense forests in valleys at altitudes of 300-600 meters.
Red sandalwood is a kind of broad-sense mahogany wood with good quality and appreciation value. Its wood quality, color and pattern, as well as price are more than many mahogany varieties. It is also a powerful substitute for Huanghua pear and Indian rosewood after they are scarce. It has great value-added potential.
Lingnan jasmine, alias: red sandalwood, small flower jasmine, red iron pigeon bean, Latin name:
Huodendron var. Biaristatum (W. W. Sm) Rehd. var. parviflorum (Merr) Rehd.
The difference between this variety and the original variety is that the branchlets and petioles are glabrous. Leaves smaller, 5-10 cm long, 2.5-4.5 cm wide, 4-6 lateral veins on each side, protruding above midrib and lateral trunk, glabrous. Flowering from March to May and fruiting from August to October. [2]
树皮厚2.0cm,略粗糙,质软;斜削面呈红黄相间分层。 The outer surface is grayish-brown to grayish-white.
Base bright yellow; with large deep longitudinal fissures. The endothelium is light yellowish brown; phloem fibers are slightly developed.
Cross section: Heart sapwood has obvious difference. Heartwood reddish-brown, often with dark concentric circular stripes. The sapwood is light yellow with irregular black stripes. The growth rings are slightly visible. macro
Visual structure: porous materials. Under the tube-hole magnifier, it is obvious, slightly less, medium-sized; it is mainly single-tube-hole, a few diameter-row compound-tube-holes (2-5); it has pale yellow gum-white sediments. Axial parenchyma is distinct and well developed under naked eyes, with zonal (small spacing, wavy) and rim-like adjacent tubules. It is visible under a wood-ray magnifying glass, slightly dense and very narrow.
Geographical Distribution: It is mainly imported from Madagascar and Mozambique by containerized transportation in tropical America and Africa.
Variety classification
African red sandalwood is also known as yellow sandalwood. When it first entered China in the 1990s, it was identified as red acid branch, which was corrected in 2001. It was actually red iron pigeon bean. It has fine structure, pleasant wood color, beautiful patterns, many characteristics are similar to red acid branch.

One of the identification methods of Castanopsis fissa, commonly known as red sandalwood, is that red sandalwood belongs to the broad category of red wood, which is called red sandalwood because of its red wood. Sawdust or sawdust of sandalwood soaked in water or liquor. The water extract of red sandalwood sawdust is red with fluorescence on it. Red sandalwood sawdust soaked in alcohol can dye cloth, never fade.
Main value
The heartwood is light red, yellow, reddish-brown, dark and purple for a long time, often accompanied by deep and shallow stripes (like muscle fibers). Structures are slightly coarse to fine, texture wavy or staggered. The wood is lustrous and has a faint fragrance. The air-dry density is less than 1.0 g/cm3. The material is very hard. Planing, turning and wear resistance are good. Very resistant to rot and termites. Mainly applicable to furniture, floor, sculpture, crafts, heavy structure, sports equipment, musical instruments and so on.
The market commonly known as "small leaf red sandalwood", in the mahogany furniture factory used to make furniture is more, in March 2008 has risen to 13,000/cubic meters. Red iron pigeon beans were once used to imitate red acid branches on the market. They were officially named red iron pigeon beans and then became red sandalwood.
